About The Band
Pink Floyd was A psychedelic rock band from the UK. Before they were Pink Floyd they called themselves Sigma 6 and were a cover band doing blues music before moving to Rock and Roll. Syd Barrett was the leader of this group and their debut album was released in 1967. The members included Syd Barrett, David Glilmour, Nick Mason, Roger Waters, and Rick Wright. Syd Barrett left the group in 1968 because of serious experimentation with LSD which led to serious mental health issues. Syd Barrett helped to give Pink Floyd a name for themselves in the UK with Psychedelic Rock.
David Gilmour became the lead guitarist and main vocalist for Pink Floyd after Barrett left and the members remained the same in the band for 15 more years.
For most of their history they were a very private group. Little was known or recorded about their personal lives. It was only near the end of the band when they ran into legal arguments that people became more aware of the turmoil in the band's dynamics.
In the 70's Roger Waters was the bassist and he did most of the songwriting and direction and it was then that Pink Floyd became one of the most famous and influencing rock bands of all time.
Deep space became a focus of the band's writing and you can hear some of this in "Dark Side of the Moon" which is considered their masterpiece and on "Interstellar Overdrive" which is a 9 minute instrumental with no vocals.
The band had taken a cinematic approach to music catching the eye of critics, giving themselves a distinct sound and did music writing for several movies.
In 1973 "Dark Side of the Moon" stayed number one on the billboard charts for 743 weeks and did not drop off until 1988. This album talked about topics such as ageing, time, madness and money.
"Wish You Were Here" was released in 1975 and an important song "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" was written for Syd Barrett.
Their success continued into the 80's with the famous release of "The Wall." An album that had a dark and negative mood and talked about childhood, marriage, and education. It went number one on the charts and they toured a very elaborate and theatrical stage show. This was the last album created with all four members. They used an actual wall on stage to make the effect of the music more real. People could relate to this album because they were showing how everyone is just avoiding their feelings like bricks in a wall. After this "The Final Cut" was recorded in 1983 it was an anti-war album and was very difficult to finish because the band was fighting; the band disbanded after this album.
There were some rumors of legal battles between Waters and the other three members. Solo albums were made as well as two more group albums in the 90's which did well on the charts showing that this band never seems to lose the public's interest. The bands most recent album that was released in 2014 was called "The Endless River", and members of the band are still doing solo shows today.
